She Tows the Line, 2024

Rope, liquid matte medium, clear caulking

20”x 22”

This piece is meant to resemble a coiled-up extension (additional rope that can be added to a buoy line to extend its length). A poem I wrote that shares the title of the piece is repeated along the third strand of the rope. The work belongs to a series that includes Bound, Domain, and The Long Haul. The poem can be found below.

She Tows the Line

JoAnna Howlett

I am existing in a body that is not of my choosing.

I am told that my presence will anger her and distract them.

So as I pace from bow to stern with purpose, I will calm her and become their distraction.

I will haul, coil, bait, band, and measure as the salt licks my skin.

For despite their dominance, this is my domain.
