What Connects Us, 2024

Rope, twine, metal ring

12’ x 6’

I created this suspended work by splicing lengths of new and used rope together. While connecting these pieces of rope I reflected on how different I am compared to the previous two generations of fishermen in my family. While we engage with fishing somewhat differently, it is the continuation of the practice that connects us. Further, splicing can be used as a form of mending. This piece is also an exercise in posthumously attempting to mend complicated family dynamics.
